Yamuna Chicken Center

This shop at H. No 1-119 in Gangaram is where we spend most of our waking hours. It is a simple chicken center, nothing like those big supermarkets you see in the city. We get the birds in early in the morning when the air is still a bit cool. The first thing we do is get the water heating up and sharpen the knives on the stone. By the time people start waking up in Kothagudem, we are already busy. Sunday mornings are the most hectic time for us. There is usually a small crowd of men standing around the front, waiting for their turn and talking about the news. We use those heavy wooden chopping blocks that have deep grooves from years of use. It is a messy job, and there is always water on the floor from cleaning things down, but that is how a butcher shop is supposed to be. We keep the crates stacked out back. Sometimes the noise from the birds is a bit much, but you get used to it after a few days of working here. We do not have any fancy displays or cooling systems, just fresh stock that comes in and goes out the same day. Most of the people who come here are neighbors we have known for years. They know exactly where to find us in Gangaram when they need something for their lunch.
