Gaali Looms

Down in Maruthinagar, at 78-4-29, you’ll find our little setup. We’ve been running these looms for a long time in Akkpedianera. The sound is the first thing you notice when you walk toward the building. It’s a steady clacking that fills up the whole space. We’ve got rows of machines and a lot of thread everywhere. It’s a bit of a maze sometimes with all the different colors and types of yarn sitting around in baskets. We don't have a big storefront; it's mostly just the workspace where we get things done. The lighting isn't the best, but we know where every switch and lever is. Most of us grew up around this kind of work, so it feels natural. We take turns watching the machines to make sure nothing snags or breaks. During the afternoon slump, we usually sit outside for a bit to get some air and talk about the neighborhood. It’s a tight-knit place. We don't use any high-tech systems for our day-to-day stuff; we mostly just rely on what we’ve learned over the years. If the machines are running well, it’s a good day. The floor is usually covered in bits of lint and thread, but that’s just part of the job. We don’t try to be anything we’re not. It’s just a local loom business where we show up and put in the hours. The neighbors are used to the noise by now, and we’ve become a fixed part of the street here in Maruthinagar.
