Down here in Alleppey, we operate out of Kottoor House in Nangiarkulangara. It’s a bit of a change from the big city offices you see in magazines, but it works for us. We do a lot of engineering work and consulting, mostly focused on the heavy stuff like steel and industrial plants. Even though the surroundings are quiet and green, our desks are usually piled high with blueprints and technical manuals. The building has that old Kerala feel to it, which is nice when the weather gets hot because the walls are thick. We spend most of the day on calls or looking at designs on our screens. Sometimes clients come by, but mostly we’re just communicating with the bigger sites. It’s a lot of math and double-checking figures. We have a few guys who’ve been doing this for thirty years, and then some younger ones who are still learning how we do things here. The 605139 area is a good place to be based because it’s not as chaotic as Kochi but we can still get everything we need. Lunch is usually a quiet affair, and then it’s back to the engineering problems. We don’t do much advertising; people just know the name in this industry. We just focus on getting the drawings right and making sure the projects we’re advising on don’t have any major hiccups. It’s steady, honest work.
