Barjesh General Store

The shop is located on DLW Road in Kakarmatta and if you know Varanasi you know how the traffic can get around here. We are quite close to the Nawada Cowki so there is usually a lot of movement throughout the day. I find myself spending a lot of time just moving crates around to make space for the new deliveries that come in on the rickshaws. The floor is a bit uneven in the back corner but we have gotten used to it over the years. We stock the usual things people need for their kitchens like lentils and flour and different kinds of spices that come in those small plastic pouches. Some days it feels like I am just handing out change all day long because everyone brings big notes for small purchases. The light inside isn't the brightest but it works well enough to see what is on the shelves. There is a certain smell of spices and soap that just lingers in the air here all the time. Outside the street is always full of people heading towards the station or coming back from work. I usually keep a bottle of water tucked under the counter because it gets really dry in the afternoons. Sometimes I sit outside on a plastic chair when the shop is empty just to watch the bikes go by. It is just a regular place where we try to keep enough stock so nobody leaves empty-handed.
