Over by Ram Dawara in Vidisha, you’ll find our school. It’s been sitting on this same plot of land for a long time, and the neighborhood has grown up all around it. Jain H S School isn't a place with marble floors or air conditioning in every room. It’s more the kind of place where the windows stay open and you can hear the birds and the traffic from the street outside while you're trying to study. We have a lot of stairs and long hallways that get quite a workout from all the students running back and forth. The morning assembly is usually the loudest part of the day, with everyone lined up in the courtyard. After that, it settles into a steady hum of teachers talking and students scratching notes into their notebooks. We spend a decent amount of time fixing up the old desks and making sure the library books are in some kind of order. It feels like a real part of Vidisha, nothing fancy or fake about it. Sometimes the rain makes the courtyard a bit muddy, or the dust from the road settles on the windowsills, but we just wipe it off and keep going. It’s a practical place for learning. We aren't trying to impress anyone with big signs; we just want to make sure the kids who come here every day get through their lessons and head home with a bit more knowledge than they had.
