G.R. Rice Mill

You can find G.R. Rice Mill out on Khatima Road in the Udham Singh Nagar area. It’s a busy stretch of road, so there’s always trucks passing by. Our gate is usually open early because that’s when the first loads start arriving. The mill isn't anything special to look at, just a sturdy building with a lot of machinery inside. We deal with rice all day long. Some days the dust is everywhere, and you have to keep the windows shut in the small office area. I usually spend my time checking the scales or talking to the drivers who come in from the surrounding farms. We’ve been here for a while now, and the routine hasn't changed much. The machines are old but they still do the job if you treat them right. We don't spend much on advertising or anything like that. People know where we are. Usually, it’s just word of mouth between the farmers. When the monsoon hits, things get a bit messy with the mud on the road, but we keep the mill floor dry. We have a few sheds for storage, which get pretty full during the peak months. It’s a lot of lifting and moving bags around. My hands are usually calloused from the work, but I don’t mind it. It’s a decent way to earn a living here in Khatima. We just take it one day at a time, making sure the rice is processed.
