New India General Store

At New India General Store in Badarda, within the Dwarkesh Market in Kankroli, things are always moving. We are a typical general store, which means we sell just about everything a household might need for their daily cooking and cleaning. We have sacks of rice and flour sitting on the floor and shelves filled with soaps, spices, and snacks. The morning starts early for us because we have to receive the milk and bread deliveries before the customers start arriving. It’s a small space, so we have to be very clever about how we stack the boxes. Sometimes the shop feels like a maze of cardboard and plastic. We know almost everyone in Kankroli who shops with us. We hear all the local news and gossip while we are weighing out pulses or packing bags. Our scale is probably the most used thing in the shop, and we are constantly cleaning it. We don't use any fancy marketing tricks; we just put the goods out and wait for people to come in. Sometimes we run out of things and have to tell people to come back tomorrow, which is just part of how it goes. The market can be quite chaotic, especially on weekends, but we just keep working through the list of items people want. It’s a busy, dusty, and noisy life, but it’s our life here at the store. We’ve been here for years and hope to stay.
