National Confectionary Works

Our place is over in Kalaji Goraji. It’s an old part of town and the streets can be a bit narrow for the delivery vans sometimes. National Confectionary Works has been around for more years than I can count on my fingers. We spend most of our time in the back where the big pans are. We make different kinds of sweets and hard candies that kids and adults around here seem to like. It is a bit loud in the workshop when the machines are running, so we have to shout to hear each other. We aren't trying to be some big corporate factory. It's just a bunch of us working together to get the orders out on time. The floors get a bit sticky from the sugar, which is just part of the job I suppose. We supply a lot of the smaller shops nearby. Sometimes people just walk in off the street because they smell the sugar cooking. We don't have fancy packaging or anything, just plain bags and boxes that do the job. My father started this and now we are just keeping it going. Some days the heat from the boilers is almost too much, but we take breaks and drink plenty of water. It’s a steady life and we like being part of the community here in this neighborhood. We just keep our heads down and keep the sugar boiling.
