Manglam Sweets & Namkeens

Manglam Sweets & Namkeens is situated on Sunderwas Main Road. It’s a good location for us because people are always moving past. We have a lot of different kinds of namkeens in big glass bins. Some are spicy, some are plain. We spend the morning frying the sev and the papdi. The smell of hot oil is something you never really get out of your clothes. We’ve got a small kitchen in the back where all the heavy work happens. It's usually a bit of a mess back there with flour sacks and tins of oil. The shop area is where we meet the public. We get all sorts of people, from students to elderly folks who have lived in Sunderwas forever. They like to talk about the weather or the local news while we weigh out their orders on the digital scale. Sometimes the scale acts up and we have to reset it. We don't have any fancy decorations on the walls, just a calendar and a small shelf for incense. It’s a practical place. We focus on getting the food out and making sure the packets are sealed tight so things don't go soft in the humid air. Every day is pretty much the same, but it keeps us busy and pays the bills. We don't ask for much more than that. We just keep frying and packing until the sun sets.
