Mahaveer Granites

Badarda is a quiet spot in Rajsamand where we handle things at Mahaveer Granites. Out here, the sun gets pretty hot on the stone slabs during the afternoons. Most days start early before the heat really kicks in. We spend a lot of time just moving blocks around and checking what came in on the last truck. There is a lot of dust, that is just part of the job when you deal with granite every day. My clothes usually have a layer of it by lunchtime. It is not fancy work but it keeps us busy enough. The road leading up to the yard can get a bit bumpy after the rains, so we have to watch the tires on the loaders. People from around the district stop by to look at the different colors we have sitting out. Sometimes we sit under the shade of the small office roof to have tea and talk about how the market is moving. It feels like we have been in this village forever. You get to know the neighbors and the drivers who pass through regularly. There is a certain rhythm to the cutting and polishing sounds that you just get used to. We do not have a big fancy showroom or anything like that. Just the yard and the stone. It is practical work and it gets done. If someone needs a particular slab, we go find it in the stacks. That is basically life here in Badarda for us.
