Kamal Marble

Kamal Marble is right near the Vandana Bridge on N.H. 8 in Sukher. If you know the bridge, you can't miss us. It’s a busy part of the road. There’s always the sound of traffic and the clank of stone being moved. We’ve been working out of this yard for years. It’s not a fancy place by any means. There’s a lot of mud when it rains and a lot of dust when it’s dry. We just keep our marble stacks lined up so people can see them from the road. I usually spend my time talking to the drivers or checking on the cutting. We don't have any big corporate mission or anything like that. We just sell stone. Sometimes the bridge gets crowded and the traffic backs up right in front of our gate. It gives people a chance to look at our stock, I guess. We have a small tea stall nearby where we go for breaks. It’s a very local way of doing things. We don't use fancy computers for everything; a lot is still done with pen and paper. Sukher is a tough place to work because of the competition, but we just stick to our spot by the bridge. We’ve seen the bridge get repaired and the road widened, but we’re still here doing the same work every day. It’s a lot of manual labor, but it keeps us busy and pays the bills.
