Operating out of Sukher has its ups and downs. It is the hub for everything stone-related around here, so there is a lot of competition. We focus on being suppliers, which means we spend a lot of our time on the phone or meeting with contractors who need specific amounts of material for their building sites. I spend a lot of time driving around to different quarries to pick out the best blocks before they get snatched up by the bigger players. My office is just a small room with a desk and some samples of the stones we usually carry. It’s not very organized, but I know where everything is. The guys in the yard are hard workers and they deal with the dust and the heat every day without complaining much. We usually stop for a long break in the afternoon when the sun is at its peak. We sit in the shade and eat our tiffins. Sometimes we don’t have the exact color a customer wants, so we have to go searching for it through our contacts. It’s a lot of coordination and making sure the trucks are loaded correctly so the slabs don’t break during transport. We’ve had a few accidents over the years, which is always a setback, but you just have to keep going. We aren’t trying to be the biggest company, just trying to keep the orders filled.
