If you head out toward Amberi on National Highway 8, you’ll find Jai Hind Marbles Udaipur. Being right on the highway means we see a lot of trucks and heavy traffic going past all day long. The air is almost always a bit white from all the marble dust in this area. It’s just the nature of the business in Udaipur. We have a lot of space here to keep our inventory. We spend most of our time out in the yard, checking the quality of the blocks and slabs that come in. It’s hard work and your hands get rough after a while. We don’t have a fancy reception area or anything like that. Usually, people just pull up off the highway and walk into the shed to talk to us. We’ve been here in Amberi for a long time, so we’ve seen the highway change and get busier over the years. Our day starts early before the sun gets too high, though it’s always warm around the stones. We don’t use any complicated software to run the shop. We just keep our logs and make sure the orders get loaded onto the right trucks. It’s a busy life, but it’s what we know. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. We just trade marble and try to keep the business moving forward one day at a time.
