Moorthy Modern Rice Mill

Our mill, Moorthy Modern Rice Mill, is over at No. 65 on the Kalleripattu Road. We are situated in Velapadi, which is part of the Arani region. Arani is famous for its rice, so there are a few mills around, but we’ve been at this spot for quite some time. The building is older and has seen a lot of seasons. We start early when the sun is just coming up to get a head start on the day's milling. The Kalleripattu Road gets a bit of traffic with trucks and bullock carts bringing in the harvest. Inside the mill, it’s all about the machinery. We have these big hullers and polishers that make a lot of noise. It’s not the kind of place you’d want to wear nice clothes to because of all the dust. We take the raw paddy and turn it into the white rice that people use for their meals. There’s a lot of lifting involved, and by the afternoon, everyone is usually ready for a break under the shade of the trees outside. We don't have a fancy showroom or anything. If you come by, you’ll just see us working or maybe sitting on a stack of sacks checking the quality of the grain. We keep a simple logbook of what comes in and what goes out. It’s a practical, local business that supports the farmers around Velapadi and keeps the rice moving to the markets for families to eat.
