Our facility is out in Udumalpet, specifically in Gandhi Nagar, Elayamuthur Post. It’s a bit of a long drive if you are coming from Coimbatore. Lohmann Breeders India is the name on our gate. We focus on breeding birds. It’s a very specialized kind of farming work. The area around Elayamuthur is quite open and windy, which is generally good for the birds. We have these long, low sheds where everything is kept. It’s much quieter out here compared to the main town area. Most of our days are spent checking on the health of the breeders and the eggs. We have to be very careful about who comes in and out to keep things clean. It’s not that we’re being difficult, it’s just how it has to be for the birds' safety. We wear these plain uniforms and spend a lot of time on our feet on the concrete floors. The staff lives mostly in the nearby villages. We don't have any big corporate slogans or fancy mission statements. We just want the chicks to be healthy and the eggs to be okay. The weather in Udumalpet is usually a bit better than the humid coast, but it still gets very dry. We have to manage the ventilation in the sheds constantly throughout the day. It’s a very practical business. We’ve been at this Gandhi Nagar location for a while now. If you come by, you’ll mostly see people in boots working hard. It’s just honest poultry work.
