If you head down Chinna Kumarapallayam Road towards Kurichikottatai Post, you’ll find us at 32/B2. We are right in the middle of the coconut area near Uttumalaipet. The whole place smells like coconut fiber and earth. We spend most of our time processing the husks and turning them into different products. It’s a messy job, but there’s a rhythm to it that I actually like. The sun in Uttumalaipet is usually strong, which is good because we need the heat to dry things out in the big open yard. We have some simple machinery that hums along, but a lot of the work is still done by hand. We’ve got a group of local people who come in every day to help with the sorting and packing. It’s not like a big factory you’d see in the city. It’s more of a local operation where everyone knows each other’s business. We sit under the shade of the trees when we take our breaks and drink tea. Sometimes the road gets blocked by a slow tractor, but nobody really minds. We just keep moving the bags of coco pith and fiber as they get ready. It’s a quiet life for the most part, away from the main city buzz. We just focus on what we have in front of us on Chinna Kumarapallayam Road and try to finish before it gets dark. The seasons change how much work we can do outside.
