Sri Ponnuswamy Rice Mill

Out at 105, East Coast Road, you’ll find Sri Ponnuswamy Rice Mill. We are located in the Unai area, and being on the ECR means we see plenty of travelers passing by every day. The mill itself is a sturdy old building that has been around for quite some time. Inside, it’s a world of its own, filled with the roar of the hullers and the smell of fresh paddy. We spend our time checking the quality of the grain and making sure the machinery stays in good working order. It’s a lot of dusty work, and you definitely won't stay clean for long once you step inside. We serve a lot of the local farmers in Unai who bring their harvest to us every year. There’s a small area where the trucks pull in, and it gets pretty hectic when everyone arrives at once. We don’t have any fancy business strategies. We just focus on keeping the mill running and making sure the bags are filled correctly. The sea air sometimes makes its way in, which helps a bit with the heat from the machines. Most of our crew has been here for years, so we all know the routine like the back of our hands. It’s a straightforward, hardworking life. We close up the big doors in the evening and head home, ready to do it all over again the next day.
