R R Modern Rice Mill

We’ve been here at number 14 in Mayamankurichi for a good while now. Most days start pretty early because the sun gets hot over Alangulam and it’s better to get the machines going before the real heat kicks in. It is noisy work, there is no denying that, but you get used to the hum of the mill after a few weeks. We spend most of our time moving bags of paddy around and checking that the rollers are doing what they are supposed to do. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit around in the shade for a bit until it comes back on. It’s not a fancy place, just a regular mill with dust on the floors and a lot of work to do. People from around here know where we are. We don't really do much besides the rice milling. The bags stack up high near the entrance and we try to keep things organized so we don't trip over our own feet. It’s hard work on the back, especially when the trucks arrive and everything needs to be unloaded. We just keep at it day by day. The mill has its own rhythm and we just follow it. It’s just us here, making sure the grain gets processed right and sent back out to whoever needs it next. We check the weather every morning before we open the gates. Sometimes the farmers bring by a bit of extra lunch when they drop off their harvest.
