Gomathi Rice Mill

Gomathi Rice Mill is out on the road that goes from Kodikurichi to Tenkasi. The address is 46, Kodikurichi To Tenkasi Road, Kambley, which is where we spend all our time. You can't really miss it if you are driving along that stretch because of the sound the machines make when they are running. It gets pretty loud and the air always has that smell of fresh grain and husks. Farmers bring their loads over on tractors or bullock carts mostly. We have been working this mill for a long time. It is a dusty job and our clothes are usually covered in it by the end of the shift. The building is solid but old. We spend a lot of time maintaining the hullers and the boilers so they don't break down when we have a big batch to process. The road outside can be quiet some days and then very busy during the harvest season. We don't have a big staff, just a few local guys who know how the machinery works. We drink tea during the breaks and sit near the entrance to catch a breeze. It’s hard work, especially when the heat is high, but people need their rice done right. We don't bother with fancy branding or anything like that. It’s just the mill, the road, and the bags of rice lined up ready to go back to the villages. We stay open until the last load is finished for the day.
