Sri Ayappan Rajasthan Kulfi & Ice Cream

You can find us at number 19 on Surathbhavan Street in the Perambur Barracks area. We are specifically located in Pattalam. It gets incredibly hot and humid in this part of Chennai, so we are usually quite busy whenever the sun is shining. Making kulfi is a slow and steady process that we have been doing the same way for a long time. There is a lot of manual work involved, like stirring the milk and waiting for things to freeze just right in the moulds. The shop itself is not very big, so it feels crowded very quickly when a group of kids shows up after school or in the evenings. We try our best to keep everything tidy, but when you are dealing with ice cream, there is always going to be a bit of a sticky spot somewhere on the counter. We open up early in the morning to start the batches. By the time evening rolls around, the street gets really lively with neighbors walking by and looking for something cold to eat. We know most of the families in Pattalam since they have been coming to us for years. The Rajasthan style kulfi is the only thing we really know how to make well, so that is what we stick to. It is a simple way to make a living. We don't have air conditioning for the customers, just a freezer and a counter where we serve the ice cream.
