Dhanalakshmi Sugar Mill

Dhanalakshmi Sugar Mill is situated on the Tanjore Main Road. If you are heading through Thiruverumbur, you can’t miss us at 44/5A. It is a big place with a lot of heavy machinery that makes a lot of noise. When the mill is running, you can feel the floor vibrate a little bit. We have been working here for a long time. It’s a lot of dust and heat, but we are used to it by now. The trucks come in loaded with cane and leave with bags of sugar. My job is to make sure the loading goes smoothly and that the gates are clear. We have a small office near the entrance where we keep the logs. It’s usually cluttered with pens, papers, and half-empty water bottles. We don't have any fancy decorations. The walls are just plain and the furniture is old wood. We start early and finish late, especially during the peak season. Sometimes we have to stay overnight if a machine breaks down or if there’s a big shipment coming in. The main road is always busy with cars and buses, so we have to be careful when the big vehicles are pulling out. It’s just a regular mill life. No one here wears a suit. We wear our work clothes and get our hands dirty. It’s honest work and it keeps the town moving in its own way. We just keep the gears turning and the sugar moving.
