The Canning Industries Cochin Ltd.

Our building sits right on Caico Road, which is actually named after us because we’ve been here so long. The Canning Industries Cochin Ltd. is an old-fashioned sort of place. The building itself has been around for decades and you can tell by the way the bricks look and the height of the ceilings. Inside, there is the rhythm of the canning lines which has a very specific clinking sound that you hear all day. Depending on what we are canning, the whole road smells like fruit or vegetables. We have these big vats and sealing machines that have been maintained for years. It’s not a high-tech facility with robots; it’s more about people watching the belts and making sure the lids are on straight. The office part is filled with old wooden cabinets and files that go back a long way. We still use some of the same methods we started with because they work just fine for what we do. Our workers usually live nearby and many have been with us for their whole lives. During the monsoon, the rain hits the tin roof so hard you can barely hear yourself think. We just keep the lines moving and make sure the crates are stacked properly in the warehouse. It’s a slow and steady kind of life here on Caico Road for everyone.
