Shloka Garments

Shloka Garments is a small place located in Murkanad, right near the Vadaparambil Post Office. We specialize in making clothes, mostly traditional stuff but we do whatever the locals need. It’s a family-run kind of setup. We have a few sewing machines going most of the day. The sound of the needles is something you get used to. We don't have a big storefront with mannequins and bright lights. It’s more of a workshop where people come in to get measured or pick up their finished outfits. Murkanad is a small place, so everyone knows everyone. We get a lot of our work through word of mouth. Someone gets a dress made for a wedding, and then their cousin comes in the next week. We try to be careful with the stitching, but sometimes we get a bit behind when there’s a festival coming up and everyone wants their new clothes at once. Those weeks are pretty crazy and we end up working late by lamplight. We buy our fabrics from the local markets and try to pick out the best colors. It’s simple work, but it’s what we know. We aren't some big fashion brand. We’re just a local garment shop trying to do a good job for the people in our village. If you’re passing the post office, you can usually hear our machines humming away inside. It is a quiet life for the most part, but we like the craft and seeing our work being worn by our neighbors.
