Handloom Weavers Development Society

Handloom Weavers Development Society is located in Thumpodu, right in the Balarampuram area. This place is all about the looms. You can hear the rhythmic clicking of the wooden machines from the moment you walk into the building. It is a society where we come together to work on traditional weaving. There is cotton and yarn everywhere, in every color you can think of. Most of us have been doing this since we were young, so it is just second nature now. The building is old and it has a lot of character, much like the fabrics we make. We do not have modern machinery; it is all done by hand and foot. It takes a long time to finish a single piece, but we do not like to rush. Sometimes the thread snaps and we have to stop and fix it, which can be frustrating, but that is part of the craft. We sit together and work, talking about the day or just focusing on the patterns. It is a quiet kind of life here in Thumpodu. We are just trying to keep the old ways going as long as we can. People come from all over to see how we do things and they are always surprised by how much effort goes into every inch of cloth. We are just a group of weavers who enjoy the work and the community we have built over the years.
