About Sunrise Pottery Works – Art & Craft in Surendranagar
You can find us in Amarapar, though most of our mail goes to P. O. Box. 51 because the local delivery can be a bit spotty. Sunrise Pottery Works is a place where we get our hands dirty every single day. We’ve got the wheels and the kilns set up, and there’s always a stack of raw clay waiting to be worked on. It’s a traditional kind of setup. We don't use much automation here. Most of what we do is by hand, so each pot or jar ends up looking a little different from the next one. We think that’s fine, actually. It shows someone actually made it. The air in Amarapar is usually dry, which helps with the drying process, but the wind can blow dust into everything if we aren't careful. We started this because there’s something good about making a physical object out of nothing but mud and fire. We don't have a polished showroom. If you visit, you’ll just see rows of pottery drying in the sun and us covered in grey splashes. It’s not a glamorous job, and the pay isn't huge, but it keeps us busy. We sell to local markets and some traders who come through the district. We don't have a big plan for the future. We just want to keep the clay spinning and the fires burning as long as people still want handmade pots for their kitchens and gardens.
