Down here at the Hazira Manufacturing Complex, things are always moving. We are specifically over in the Welding Engineering Dept. within the SEZ area. It is a massive place. You really feel the scale of everything when you walk down Hazira Road in the morning. L&T-Mhi Boilers Pvt. Ltd. operates in a world of heavy steel and the constant blue light of welding arcs. It is hot, especially during the summer months when the sun hits the metal roofs of the workshops. There is a specific smell to this place, like ozone and burnt metal, that stays on your clothes even after you go home. We don't have a quiet office with carpets. Our floors are concrete and marked with yellow lines for safety. Everyone is usually in their gear, carrying helmets or tools. It’s an honest kind of work. We spend the day checking joints and looking at metal plates. The canteen is a long walk from our department, so we usually just bring our own tiffins and eat where we can. Hazira is out of the way for most people, but for us, it’s just where the work happens. The noise of the machinery is like a constant background beat. We don't worry about looking fancy. We just worry about getting the welds right and making sure the boilers are solid before they leave the yard.
