Our place, Jaya Art, is right on the 1st Main Road in Surat. It is a busy street, so there is always noise from the scooters and cars outside. Inside, it is a bit different. We have frames leaning against the walls and bits of wood and glass everywhere. We do a lot of framing and some small art pieces when we have the time. The floor is usually covered in sawdust because we cut the frames right there in the back. It isn't a gallery where everything is perfect and white. It is a workshop. We have pencils stuck behind our ears and glue on our hands most of the day. People bring in their photos or paintings and we help them pick out a border. Sometimes they are in a hurry and we have to work late to get things finished. We have been on this road for quite a while. The sign out front is a bit faded from the sun. We do not have any fancy machines, just the old ones that still work fine if you know how to handle them. It is a lot of manual work and our backs usually ache by the end of the day. But we like seeing the finished product when it is all put together. We just keep making frames and helping folks with their art as long as they keep coming by.
