Yamin Khan Scrap Merchant

You can find me over at Neb Sarai D Block 4. I have been collecting scrap for a long time now, and it is what I know best. My yard is always full of old newspapers, rusted iron rods, and stacks of plastic bottles that reach all the way to the ceiling. It is a dusty place, and my hands are almost always black from handling the metal and the old car parts people bring in every afternoon. I have a big manual weighing scale that I use to figure out the price of everything. It is not the cleanest job in the world, but I like being my own boss and working on my own time. Every morning, I open the gate and start sorting through what came in the day before. Some people think it is just trash, but I see the value in all that copper wire and those old heavy batteries that people throw away. The neighbors sometimes complain about the noise when we are crushing the cans, but we try to keep it down as much as possible. My kids come by after school and sometimes they help me move the lighter bundles of cardboard to the truck. We don't have a computer or anything like that here, just a simple notebook where I keep track of what I buy and sell. The tea stall guy across the street knows my order by heart. It is hard work, especially in the sun.
