We are at Shop No. 197 in the local Anaj Mandi. The name of the business is Tulsi Ram Vijay Kumar. Being in the grain market means our lives follow the seasons. When the harvest comes in, the whole place is packed with tractors and trucks full of sacks. It is incredibly dusty and loud during those months. You can smell the grain everywhere. We have a big scale for weighing and plenty of ledgers for keeping track of everything. We spend a lot of time drinking tea and waiting for the next load to arrive. It is a lot of waiting and then a lot of very fast work. We have been here for many years, following in the footsteps of those who came before us. It is not a glamorous job. Your clothes always end up covered in dust by the end of the shift. We know all the other traders in the Mandi. We see the same faces every day. It is a tight-knit community here. We don't have a website or anything like that. People just know our shop number and they come by when they have business to do. It is just how things work here.
