Khera Food Products

Our place is at House Number 148 in Ward Number 6, right in the middle of Garhi Mohalla. It’s a bit tucked away, but most people know the way because we are so close to the Dv Girls Public School. You can usually hear the kids playing during their break time while we are busy inside the house. We do all the food prep and packing right here. It started as a small family thing in the kitchen, and then we just took over more rooms in the house as we got busier and needed more space for the bags. The walls are lined with bags of ingredients and the smell of spices is always hanging in the air, even on our days off. We don't have a big fancy sign or anything, just the door that stays open most of the day for ventilation. My mother and my sisters do a lot of the sorting and the cleaning of the grains by hand. We get our supplies from the local market early in the morning before the streets get too crowded with scooters and carts. It’s a quiet neighborhood mostly, except for when the school starts or lets out in the afternoon. We have a couple of big tables where we sit and pack everything into small plastic bags. It takes a long time, but we like to make sure it’s done right. We don't use any big machines, just some small scales and heat sealers. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from sunrise until the streetlights come on in the mohalla.
