Mangudi Sathiya Modern Rice Mill

The Mangudi Sathiya Modern Rice Mill has been here on Kilanilakkottai Road for a good while now. We are located right at number 56 in Pudhuvayal. Most days start early for us because the farmers show up with their loads before the sun is even fully up. It gets pretty loud once the machines start running but that is just how a rice mill is. There is dust everywhere and the smell of raw husks fills the air. My father started this and now we just keep it going as best as we can. We have the modern machines now which helps a lot compared to the old days but it is still a lot of physical work. People from around Pudhuvayal know where to find us. We don’t have a big office or anything fancy like that. There is just the main milling floor and a small space to sit. Sometimes the power goes out and everything stops, which is frustrating, but we just wait it out and start again. We handle mostly local varieties that come from the fields nearby. It is a simple business. We take the paddy, clean it up, and get the rice out. Nothing more to it. If you walk down Kilanilakkottai Road you can’t miss the sound of the hullers. It’s a busy spot especially during the harvest months when everyone is in a hurry to get their crop processed before the rains come.
