You can find Kanitha Sankar Dal Mill over on Railway Feeder Road in Sivagami Puram. We are situated quite close to the Apsara Theatre, so we get a lot of noise from the movie crowds on the weekends. The trains pass by pretty often too, and the whole building shakes just a little bit when the heavy ones go through. We have been processing dal here for a long time. The space is filled with heavy bags and the sound of the grinders running. It’s not a quiet job, and by the end of the day, our clothes are usually white from the dust. We start very early, usually before the theatre even opens its doors for the first show. The farmers and traders bring their loads in, and we spend our time making sure everything is sorted and processed right. We don’t have a lot of workers, just a few local guys who have been with us for a while. We eat our lunch together in the small shade outside. It isn't a corporate setup with meetings or anything like that. We just talk about the day's work and what needs to be loaded onto the trucks next. Dealing with the heat and the noise is part of the routine. People know us as the mill near the theatre, and we have lived in this rhythm for decades now, watching the town change around the railway tracks.
