Chellakkannu Rice Mill

Down here on Sayalkudi Road at number 78, things stay pretty busy with the rice mill. Ilayangudi is a place where people know their grain, so we stay on our toes throughout the seasons. Chellakkannu Rice Mill has been a part of this street for quite a bit of time now. The machines make a lot of noise throughout the day and there is always a fine layer of dust on everything, but that is just what happens when you are milling rice for a living. People bring their sacks in and we get to work. It is not a clean or quiet job, but it’s what we do for the community. The road outside can get a bit congested when the trucks are coming and going, especially during the harvest times when everyone is in a hurry to get things done. We just try to keep up with the demand and make sure the bags are filled right. If you walk in, you’ll probably find someone covered in white dust or dragging a heavy sack across the floor. We don't have a receptionist or a lobby for people to sit in. You just walk in and find whoever is near the hulling machine. It’s hard work on the back and the shoulders, but it’s been the way of life here for years. We know most of the farmers by name because they’ve been coming to 78 Sayalkudi Road since they were younger.
