H K G N Rice Wholesale Shop

The shop is at 552 in Gandhi Nagar, right on the main Harihar Road. It is basically a big warehouse space filled with stacks and stacks of rice bags. We deal in wholesale, so there are always tempos and lorries pulling up at the front to load or unload. The air inside always smells like raw grain and jute sacks. We spend a lot of time checking the weights and making sure the inventory matches the books. It gets quite heavy moving the bags around, especially when a big order comes in and we have to clear out a whole section. Gandhi Nagar is a busy area, and being on the Harihar Road means we get a lot of dust from the passing traffic. We have a small corner with a wooden table where we sit to talk to the retailers and settle the bills. The floor is concrete and stays cool, but the work is physically demanding. We don't bother with much decoration because the rice takes up all the space anyway. Most of the people we work with have been coming to us for years. We know the different varieties of rice by just looking at the grain or the brand on the sack. It is a straightforward business without any bells or whistles. We open early in the morning before the heat gets too bad and stay until the last delivery is sorted out and the shutter goes down.
