This is our flour mill located in Karad, right over in the Somwar Peth area. We are tucked into the Pantacha Kot neighborhood at shop number 673-A. The grinding machines we use make a whole lot of noise, so you can usually hear us working from a good distance down the street. We grind wheat, jowar, and all sorts of other grains for the local families around here. People bring their own bags in, we weigh them on the old scale, and then they either wait around or go run other errands and come back later. It gets extremely dusty with all that flour flying around in the air. We usually wear our oldest clothes because they just get white by the end of the shift. My father was the one who started this mill a long time ago. Now I’m the one handling the daily work. On Mondays, it gets particularly busy because it’s market day in the peth. We don't have any big signs or neon lights. Most people have known our location for years. Sometimes the electricity cuts out and we just have to sit and wait to finish the grinding, which is the only real problem we ever face. We try to keep the grinding stones sharp so the flour comes out nice. It is very simple work, but everyone needs their flour for making rotis every day. We see the same familiar faces every week and it feels good to be part of the community.
