Ferns Pickles is located in the Ganpati Phule area of Satara, not too far from the MRDC. It’s a pretty quiet spot compared to the city, but we stay busy enough with our own work. Making pickles takes a lot of time and patience, and that’s mostly what our days consist of. We spend hours cutting vegetables and mixing them with oil and different spices. The smell of vinegar and chili is always hanging in the air around our place. We have a lot of large ceramic jars and plastic drums sitting around the workspace, waiting for the ingredients to soak up all the flavor. It’s hard work on the hands and back, but we’ve been doing it for so long it feels natural now. Our facility isn't very modern; we prefer the older ways of doing things because that's how we learned. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate, especially during the monsoon when it gets too humid, and we have to be extra careful with the storage. We don't have a flashy office or a receptionist. Usually, if someone comes by, they’ll find us in the back with our sleeves rolled up. It’s a messy business, and we often have stains on our aprons by the time the day is done. We just keep our heads down and focus on filling the next batch of jars as they come in from the suppliers.
