Ambey Rice Mill

You can find Ambey Rice Mill over on Mander Road in Longowal. We are situated near the Peer Khana, which is a landmark everyone around here knows. The mill has been part of this landscape for a long time. During the season, the whole area is filled with the sound of the machines and the smell of the grain. We have a couple of big sheds where we store the bags of rice before they go out on the trucks. It is a lot of hard work, especially when the sun is beating down on the tin roofs. We don't have any big corporate office or fancy uniforms. We just wear our regular clothes and get to work moving the heavy sacks and watching the processing lines. Sometimes the dust gets to be a bit much, but we just cover our faces and keep going. We have a small group of workers who have been with us for years. We mostly talk about how the crop is looking this year and if the rain will hold off until the harvest is done. It is a simple business, really. We take the raw paddy and turn it into rice that people can cook. There is nothing fancy about it, just honest labor and keeping the machinery running. We spend most of our days in the yard or near the scales, making sure everything is weighed correctly. It is just what we do every day. The work is steady and it keeps us busy from morning until night.
