Tirupur is always loud with the sound of sewing machines, and our place in Mummorthy Nagar is no different from the rest. We are located right in the middle of Boyambalayam, which is a busy area for anyone doing garment work. There is usually a big stack of fabric rolls blocking the main entrance when I arrive in the morning. I have been working in this industry for years, so the smell of new cotton is just part of the air to me now. We have a small team here. Most of the day is spent checking seams and counting pieces before they go into the big cardboard boxes for delivery. It gets quite hot in the workspace during the afternoons, so we keep the ceiling fans running full blast. Sometimes the electricity goes out and everything stops for a bit, but that is just how it is here. I spend a lot of my time on the phone with suppliers or trying to find more floor space for the finished goods. The floor is always covered in loose threads no matter how many times we sweep it up. We are not trying to be some massive factory; we just stay focused on getting the orders out on time. My back usually aches by five o’clock, but there is a sense of pride when a shipment finally leaves on a truck. It is honest work, and Mummorthy Nagar is a good place to be.
