Kpn Silks is tucked away in Kalaingar Nagar, right in the Karungal Patty area of Gugai. It’s No. 32 if you’re looking for the house number. We’ve been working with silk here for a long time. It’s a family-run kind of thing, and the house is always full of fabric. You’ll see different colors and patterns everywhere you look. We aren't a big fancy showroom in the middle of a mall. We’re right here in the neighborhood where we live. Most of our customers are local families who have been coming to us for generations when they need something for a wedding or a festival. We spend our days checking the weave and making sure the thread is right. The air in Gugai is often filled with the sound of looms if you go down the right streets. We don't do big ads. Word of mouth is how we get by. Sometimes it gets a bit cramped when a whole family comes in to pick out sarees, but we make space. We know our silks well, from the raw thread to the finished piece. It’s a quiet life mostly, focusing on the quality of the cloth. We don’t try to rush things. Good silk takes time and a bit of patience. We’re just happy to keep the tradition going in our small corner of Salem. It’s a lot of work, but we like the results.
