Thayammal Fashion is tucked away at 12-A on 4Th Senagalpatty Street in Gugai. If you walk down the street, you’ll probably hear the sound of sewing machines long before you see our door. Gugai is a place where a lot of textile work happens, so we fit right in. We spend our time working with different fabrics, cutting patterns, and making sure the stitching is straight. It is mostly just us and the piles of cloth everywhere. Sometimes the floor is covered in loose threads and scraps by the end of the shift, and we have to clear it all out to start again the next day. We don’t really have a showroom with bright lights. It’s more of a workshop where we focus on the actual making of the clothes. The street outside is narrow, so getting deliveries in and out can be a bit of a headache sometimes, especially when the neighbors are busy too. We have a handful of workers who have been sewing for years, and they can do this stuff with their eyes closed. We do not make any big claims about being the biggest or anything. We just take the orders that come in, buy the thread and buttons we need, and get to work. It is a simple life centered around the rhythm of the needles and the cycle of the seasons when different styles of clothing are in high demand.
