Rana Masala Udyog is situated in Chatta Jambu Dass, which is one of those old, narrow lanes where you can really feel the history of the place. Working with spices means that the air around our workshop is always filled with a sharp, stinging scent of chilies and turmeric. It makes the new people sneeze for the first week, but after that, you don't even notice it anymore. We spend our days grinding and mixing, following the same steps that have been used here for a long time. The machines are old and they make a lot of noise, rattling the windows whenever they are at full speed. Chatta Jambu Dass is a tight squeeze, so getting supplies in and out can be a bit of a struggle with the narrow path and the crowds. We don't have a fancy showroom or anything like that. It’s just a workspace where the floors are always a bit orange from the powders. Most of our neighbors are doing similar things, so there is a nice sense of community in the lane. We start work early, usually while it’s still cool, and keep going until the light starts to fade. It’s physically tiring work, and your hands end up stained by the end of the day, but it’s honest. We just focus on getting the mix right and making sure the bags are tied tight for the customers who have relied on us for years.
