Doya Bricks Industry

Down in the village of Kanachi, near the Kharasimpur More, is where you will find our brick industry. We are located within the Mallarpur police station limits in the Birbhum district. It is a rural area, so our work is very much tied to the land and the seasons. We use the local soil to make our bricks, and the whole process happens right here on our grounds. You can see the tall chimney from a distance when the kiln is running. It is a lot of hard labor, from mixing the mud to stacking the finished bricks in neat rows for the buyers. The road near the More gets busy with tractors taking loads out to different construction sites around the district. We have many workers from the nearby villages who come here every day. They are the ones who really know the craft. It isn’t an easy job, especially when the sun is beating down on the open fields. We don’t have an office with air conditioning; we mostly sit under a tin roof or a tree to do our paperwork. Life here is slow in some ways but very busy in others. We just focus on making a solid product that people can use to build their homes. We’ve been part of this landscape for a while now, and we just keep doing what we know how to do, day after day.
