We are set up over at the Riico Industrial Area in Dhoinda, occupying plots F-28 through 30. It’s a decent sized space where we keep all the blocks and slabs. Being in an industrial zone means there is always noise from neighbors and trucks moving around. We moved here because the space was right for the heavy machinery we need to cut the stone. It’s not a pretty place, just concrete and stone and a lot of water for the saws. Our crew spends most of the day in boots because the floor is always wet. We get different types of marble coming in, and we spend time sorting through them to see what’s good. Sometimes the quality isn’t what we expected, which is frustrating, but you deal with it. It’s a lot of manual labor, moving things with the crane and making sure nothing chips. I’ve been working with stone for a long time and you never stop learning about the patterns. We don't do much talking, mostly just getting the orders ready for the trucks. It gets incredibly dusty in the dry months. We usually have some tea in the afternoon to take a break from the noise. It’s a basic operation but it keeps us busy every day. We aren't fancy people, just stone workers who know the trade. Our office is just a small room with a fan where we handle the invoices and talk to the drivers who come in from all over the state.
