Down in Pipards, things are a bit different than the city. Maxwell Stone Co. (P) Ltd. is based out of the Abhishek area, and we are surrounded by a lot of rough ground and open space. Working with stone means we are always dealing with the elements. If it’s not the dust from the cutting, it’s the heat reflecting off the rocks. We have a lot of heavy machinery that needs constant looking after because the grit gets into everything. Our days are filled with the sound of saws and the rumble of trucks moving in and out of the yard. We don't have a fancy showroom with air conditioning; we just have the stone and the tools we use to shape it. Most of us have been working here for years and we’ve gotten used to the physical toll it takes. We handle various types of stone, and every batch is a little different depending on where it was pulled from the earth. Sometimes we find beautiful patterns, and other times it’s just plain, solid rock. We don't spend much time on marketing or trying to sound important. We just focus on the orders we have and making sure the slabs are cut to the right size without too many mistakes. It's a tough business, but it’s what keeps the lights on here in Pipards. We just take it one day at a time, moving one heavy stone at a time.
