Chetak Marmo

Out here on National Highway-8 in Piparda, the traffic never really stops. We are right on the edge of Rajsamand, which is where a lot of the action is for this kind of work. Chetak Marmo has been part of this landscape for a good while. You can hear the big rigs downshifting as they come through this stretch of the highway. Our yard is pretty big because we need the space for the blocks coming in from the quarries. It is a rough environment, lots of grit and noise from the saws and the wind blowing across the open road. We spend our mornings checking the latest arrivals. Marble is a natural thing, so no two pieces are ever really the same. We spend a lot of time explaining that to people who stop by. We don't use a lot of fancy words. We just show the stone and let people touch it. It is honest work. The heat in the afternoon can be something else, but we have a small shaded area where we sit and figure out the day's delivery schedule. Living and working in Piparda means you get used to the highway life. Everything is about transport and timing. We make sure the slabs are tied down tight before they leave on those long trips. It is a long day's work, but seeing the trucks pull out with a full load feels good.
