Balram Gur Udyog

Balram Gur Udyog is located right across from the Thakurbari Dharamsala. If you know the Thakurbari area, you really can’t miss where we are. We work with gur, so the smell around our place is always there—sweet and very heavy. It’s a traditional kind of business that has been around for a long time. We’ve got the large pans and the heating setup in the back area. It’s hard, hot work, especially when the summer weather hits, but it’s what we’ve always done. The building is older but it stays relatively cool in the shade during the day. People staying at the Dharamsala often stop by just to see what we are up to or to have a quick chat. We don't have a big office or anything modern. Most of the actual business happens right on the floor or near the front entrance. We keep our records in a simple paper ledger. It’s not high-tech, but it works fine for us. We get the raw materials in and process them day by day. Sometimes the smoke from the fires gets a bit thick, but that’s just part of the process. Everyone around here knows Balram and the rest of the guys working here. We don’t do any fancy ads or commercials. The product speaks for itself when people get a taste of it. We just focus on getting the consistency right for every batch.
