Uttam Jain Marble

We have our stone yard out in Mahalunge. It is a big open space where we keep all the slabs of marble and granite. When you walk around, there is always white dust in the air from when we cut the pieces to size. We get stone from all over, and it arrives on big trucks that are hard to unload. We don't have a fancy showroom with lights and mirrors. You just come to the yard and look at the actual stacks of stone. Some pieces have cracks or marks, so we show those to customers so they know exactly what they are getting. We’ve been here in Mahalunge for several years now. It’s a bit of a dusty area but it’s good for storage. We use old water saws to cut the slabs, which makes a lot of noise. People come here when they are building a house or fixing up a kitchen. We just give them the prices and let them choose what they like. Sometimes we help with the loading, but mostly we just manage the stock. It’s a basic business. We don't do a lot of talking. We just show the stone, measure it, and load it up. It’s honest work and the stone is heavy, so it keeps us in shape. The sun is hot out in the open yard, but that's just how it is when you work with marble.
