Down here at Kalewadi Phata in Pune, things stay pretty busy. L&R Marbles Pvt. Ltd. has been operating out of this spot for a good while, and if you know this part of Maharashtra, you know the traffic can be a real headache. Our yard is usually full of slabs and pieces of stone waiting to go out. There is always a layer of fine white dust on everything, which is just part of the job when you deal with marbles. We don't have a big corporate lobby with leather chairs. Instead, you'll find us in the back office or out in the yard checking the stock. People come in looking for something specific for their floors or kitchens, and we just show them what we have on hand. Sometimes the trucks are late because of the road work nearby, but that’s just how it goes in Pune. We’ve seen the area change a lot over the years, with new buildings going up everywhere you look. It’s noisy and dusty, but it’s where we work. We don't do much fancy advertising. Most people find us because they drove past the phata or someone told them we had what they needed. The guys working the saws have been here forever, and they know the stones better than anyone. We just keep the gates open and keep moving the heavy stuff from one side to the other. It is a tough job but we like it enough. It keeps us on our toes.
