Sri Uma Candle Industries

Our work happens at No.4 on Vellala Street in Villianur. It is a place where we spend most of the day dealing with wax and wicks. The building is simple and serves its purpose for making candles. Usually, the air smells like unscented wax, and it can get quite hot when the melting pots are going. We have different molds set up on the tables, and there is a specific rhythm to pouring them and letting them set. It is not a fast process, and you have to be patient. We make a lot of the standard white candles that people use when the power goes out or for small shrines. There are boxes stacked up in the corners waiting to be filled and sent out. Vellala Street is usually quiet, which helps us focus on the tasks at hand. Sometimes the neighbors stop by to chat for a bit while we are packing. We do not use any big machinery, mostly just our hands and some basic tools. The floor is often a bit slippery from stray wax drips, so we have to be careful where we step. It is a very practical business. We started small and have stayed that way because it is easier to manage. Every evening we clean up the scraps of wax and prepare the molds for the next morning. It is steady work that keeps us busy throughout the year.
