Jayam Seeds

You’ll find Jayam Seeds at 154, Yanam Venkatachala Pillai St. It’s an old street with a lot of history, and we fit right in. Our work revolves around the seasons, mostly dealing with seeds and talking to people who grow things. The shop is often filled with the smell of dried grains and earth, which is something we’ve all grown to love. We spend a lot of time weighing out portions and bagging things up for the people who come in. It’s not a glamorous job, and your hands usually end up a bit dirty by lunch, but it’s satisfying. We don't have a big sales pitch. Most people come to us because they know we’ve been on Pillai Street for a while and we know our stuff. We talk a lot about the rain and the soil because that’s what matters to our customers. We aren't corporate people in suits. We are usually in simple clothes that don't mind a bit of dust. The street outside is always busy with carts and bikes, so there’s always something to look at. We just keep our ledgers by hand and make sure the bags are stacked neatly. It’s a slow and steady kind of life, and we wouldn't have it any other way. We just keep doing what we do, day after day, and hope the next harvest is a good one for everyone.
